How to change the battery in a garage door remote

  1. If there's a screw on the back, loosen it until it spins freely.
  2. Pry the case open with the visor clip or a small flathead screwdriver.
  3. Push the old battery out toward the nearest edge and note which side faces up.
  4. Put the new battery in the same way (on most coin cells the + side faces up).
  5. Snap the case back together; don't overtighten the screw. Press a button: the LED should light.

Keypads: slide or unscrew the battery cover (usually on the bottom or behind the flip cover), swap the battery and refit the cover. Your PIN stays programmed.

How to replace a garage door opener backup battery

  1. Unplug the opener.
  2. Open the battery cover on the opener head (or the separate battery box) and unplug the battery leads.
  3. Fit the new battery and reconnect the leads, red to red, black to black.
  4. Close the cover and plug the opener back in. A new battery can take 24 to 48 hours to fully charge, so the warning beep or light may stay on for a while.

Keep coin cell batteries away from children. If one is swallowed, get medical help right away. New battery didn't fix the remote? See replacement remotes or the remote finder. Questions? Call 877-379-4947.

Frequently Asked Questions

What battery does a garage door opener remote take?
Most LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie Intellicode and Sommer remotes take one 3V CR2032 coin cell. Multi-Code, Digi-Code and Stanley dip switch remotes take a 9V, Guardian standard remotes take a 12V A23, and some Linear remotes take two CR2016 or CR1616 coin cells. The chart on this page lists remotes and keypads by model.
What battery does a garage door keypad use?
LiftMaster and Chamberlain wireless keypads (877LM, 878MAX, L979M, L979U) and the Multi-Code 4200 take one 9V battery. The Genie GK-BX takes two AAA and the Linear NMTK takes three AAA.
How do I know if my garage door remote battery is low?
The range drops (you have to be close to the door), you have to press the button more than once, or the LED on the remote is dim or doesn't light. Try a fresh battery before reprogramming or replacing the remote.
Does a garage door opener have a battery?
Openers with battery backup (required on new openers sold in California) have a 12V battery in the opener head or in a separate box. It runs the door during a power outage. Many openers beep or flash a light when that battery is weak; the chart on this page shows the replacement for each brand.
How long does a garage door opener backup battery last?
Most backup batteries last a few years. When the opener starts beeping or shows a battery warning after a full charge, replace it with the battery listed for your model.
