Torsion cables connect the bottom of your garage door to the cable drums on the torsion shaft — as the springs wind the drums, the cables wind up and lift the door. Frayed or broken cables are a common failure and should be replaced in pairs. We stock galvanized and stainless steel torsion cables in 7x19 and 7x7 construction, sized for 7', 8' and 12' doors, plus premium floating-stop cables.
Always replace torsion cables in pairs. If one cable is frayed, the other is near failure too. Match the cable diameter, construction (7x7 or 7x19) and length to your door height — and remember that torsion springs must be fully unwound before working on the cables. call 877-379-4947 if unsure.
Galvanized vs. Stainless Torsion Cables
Standard galvanized aircraft cable is strong and economical for most residential doors. Stainless steel cables resist rust in coastal, humid, or salt-air environments and last longer. We carry both, including our own Moving Up Garage galvanized and premium stainless pairs, plus premium floating-stop cables that simplify installation.
Sizing Your Torsion Cables
- Door height — cable length is set by your door height; we stock 7', 8' and 12' door sizes (and longer premium cables up to 14' doors).
- Diameter — common sizes are 3/32", 1/8", 5/32" and 3/16"; heavier doors need thicker cable.
- Construction — 7x7 is stiffer; 7x19 is more flexible and the most common.
- Floating stop — premium cables with a floating stop fit a range of door heights and make replacement easier.
FAQ
What are torsion cables on a garage door?
Torsion cables run from the bottom brackets of the door up to the cable drums on the torsion shaft. As the springs wind the drums, the cables wind up and lift the door. They carry the full weight of the door, so condition matters.
Should I replace both torsion cables at once?
Yes. Cables wear at the same rate, so if one is frayed the other is close behind. Replacing both as a matched pair keeps the door balanced and prevents a second failure soon after.
What size torsion cable do I need?
Cable length is set by your door height (7', 8', 12', etc.) and diameter by door weight — common diameters are 3/32", 1/8", 5/32" and 3/16". Match what you're removing, or call us with your door height and weight.
Are stainless steel torsion cables worth it?
If your garage is in a coastal, humid, or salty environment, stainless cables resist the rust that shortens galvanized cable life. For typical inland garages, quality galvanized aircraft cable is plenty strong and more economical.
