New remote? How to program a garage door opener remote (every brand). Old one stopped working? Remote not working: fixes and batteries.

Find the right remote in 30 seconds: a replacement garage door remote has to match the radio system in your opener, not just the brand. On LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Craftsman openers, check the colour of the learn button on the motor unit. On Genie, look for an Intellicode label or the frequency. On older openers, open the remote and look for a row of DIP switches. Our Which garage door remote do I need? guide walks you through it.

Shop by brand: LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Craftsman, Genie, Linear, Multi-Code. Programming steps for each brand are in our how-to guides (for example Chamberlain and Genie). Remote dead? Try a new remote battery first.

Not sure which remote you need? Our guide shows how to tell your system from the Learn button color or dip switches: Which garage door remote do I need?

How to choose a replacement garage door remote

Three things decide whether a remote will work with your opener:

  1. Brand. Look on the motor unit, not the remote. Many openers are sold under store or installer brands.
  2. How it learns codes. A LEARN or PROGRAM button on the motor means a rolling code opener: the remote is paired by pressing that button. A row of small DIP switches means a fixed code system: you set the remote's switches to match.
  3. Frequency or generation. On LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Craftsman openers the LEARN button color tells you this. On other brands it's printed on the label or the old remote.

The fastest match: the model number on the back of your old remote, or on the opener's label. Call 877-379-4947 with it and we'll confirm the right remote.

Remotes by brand

  • LiftMaster remotes: compatibility chart by LEARN button color, from Security+ 3.0 back to Billion Code.
  • Chamberlain remotes and Craftsman remotes: same LEARN button colors as LiftMaster.
  • Genie remotes: Intellicode (1995 on) and older 9/12-switch DIP models; also fit Overhead Door CodeDodger openers.
  • Guardian remotes: D1B, D2B and D3B ClearCom 303/390 MHz for Guardian openers; the D2B replaces the R2BCC.
  • Linear, Stanley, Allstar, Multi-Code, Marantec, Sommer, Hormann, Transmitter Solutions and more: use the brand filters above the products.

Universal garage door remotes

A universal remote can replace remotes from several brands, handy when you have two different openers or don't know the original model.

  • LiftMaster L992U: 2 buttons; most major brands made after 1993 with safety sensors, including LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Craftsman (all LEARN colors), Genie, Overhead Door, Linear, Wayne Dalton and Sommer.
  • Genie GU4T-BX: 4 buttons, each set to a different brand; rolling code and many DIP switch systems.

Remote not working?

  1. Replace the battery (most remotes take a 3V CR2032 coin cell or a 12V A23).
  2. Reprogram the remote to the opener.
  3. Try the wall button. If it doesn't work either, the opener is the problem, not the remote.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I program a garage door remote?
Most openers made since the mid-1990s have a LEARN or PROGRAM button on the motor unit. Press it, then within about 30 seconds press the remote button until the opener lights flash or the door moves. Older openers with a row of DIP switches don't learn; you set the switches in the remote to match the opener.
How do I reset or erase a garage door remote?
Remotes are erased at the opener, not the remote. On LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Craftsman openers, hold the LEARN button until its LED goes out (about 6 seconds). On newer Genie openers, hold PROGRAM until the round LED turns blue, then hold the + and - buttons until both LEDs flash blue and go off. Then reprogram the remotes you keep.
Will a universal remote work with my opener?
Usually, if the opener was made after 1993 and has safety sensors at the bottom of the door track. The LiftMaster L992U covers most major brands from 1993 on. The Genie GU4T-BX controls up to 4 openers or gates and also works with many DIP switch systems. Check the brand list on the remote's page before ordering.
Why is my garage door remote not working?
Replace the battery first. If the remote's LED lights but nothing happens, reprogram it to the opener. If the wall button doesn't open the door either, the fault is in the opener. If only one remote fails, it may be damaged or no longer match the opener.
