Which Genie remote do I need?

Look at the opener's motor unit. A PROGRAM or LEARN CODE button means Intellicode (Genie openers made since 1995). A row of 9 or 12 small switches means an older DIP switch opener.

Intellicode, 1995 to now (315/390 MHz)Genuine: G1T-BX (1 button), G3T-BX (3 buttons), G3BT-P. Compatible: GRC315/390-3KB; 390GEPI1V (390 MHz Intellicode I only). Lower cost: Digi-Code DC-GN3 (Intellicode 1 and 2).
Overhead Door CodeDodger, 1995 to nowSame Intellicode remotes: G3T-BX, G3BT-P.
9 or 12 DIP switches, 390 MHz390GED21V, 390GED21K (12 switches), G220-1KB (9 or 12 switches), Genie GT912 genuine, Digi-Code DC-GN3 (9 or 12 switches, binary or trinary)
Genie plus another brandGU4T-BX 4-button universal, LiftMaster L992U
No working radio in the openerExternal receiver kits GIR1D-P and GIR3D-P wire to the opener's wall button terminals

Intellicode 1 or 2? A Learn Code button with a red LED means Intellicode 1 (1995 to 2011). A Program (or Program/Set) button with a round LED that turns blue means Intellicode 2 (newer openers). Every genuine Intellicode remote above works with both. Programming a Digi-Code remote? See how to program the DC-GN3. Not a Genie? Use our remote finder guide. Want keyless entry? See Genie keypads.

How to program a Genie remote

  1. Newer Genie openers: press and hold the PROGRAM button until the round LED turns blue, then release. The long LED starts flashing purple.
Openers made 1995 to 2011: press and release the LEARN CODE button once. The red LED starts flashing.
  2. Within about 30 seconds, slowly press and release the remote button twice. Stand at least 5 feet from the opener.
  3. The LEDs flash and go off. Press the button a third time and the door should move.

For openers made 1995 to 1997, program with one of the two upper buttons on a 3-button remote.

Erase lost remotes

Newer openers: hold PROGRAM until the round LED turns blue, then hold the + and - buttons together until both LEDs flash blue and go off. 1995 to 2011 openers: hold the LEARN CODE button until the LED stops blinking. This clears every remote and keypad, so reprogram the ones you keep.

The G3T-BX takes a CR2032 coin cell: see remote batteries. Full steps for keypads, car buttons and resetting limits: how to program a Genie garage door opener. Questions? Call 877-379-4947.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I program a Genie remote?
On newer Genie openers, hold the PROGRAM button until the round LED turns blue, then release; the long LED flashes purple. On openers made 1995 to 2011, press and release the LEARN CODE button instead. Then slowly press the remote button twice and press it a third time to run the door.
Which Genie remote fits my opener?
Genie openers made since 1995 use Intellicode: the G1T-BX (1 button) and G3T-BX (3 buttons) fit all of them. Older Genie openers with a row of 9 or 12 DIP switches need a DIP switch remote such as the 390GED21V or G220-1KB. The Digi-Code DC-GN3 is a lower-cost 3-button remote that covers both Intellicode and the older DIP switch openers.
Will a Genie remote work with a LiftMaster or Chamberlain opener?
No. Genie Intellicode remotes only work with Genie and Overhead Door openers. To run a Genie and a LiftMaster or Chamberlain door from one remote, use a universal remote such as the Genie GU4T-BX or LiftMaster L992U.
Why is my Genie remote not working?
Replace the battery first (the G3T-BX takes a CR2032 coin cell). Then reprogram the remote. Very old Genie openers made 1995 to 1997 only learn from the two upper buttons on a 3-button remote.
