Find the right wall control

LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Craftsman: match the wall control to the color of the LEARN button on the motor unit. A wall control for the wrong color won't work.

Wall control not working?

  1. Blinking light, remotes dead: the opener is in Lock mode. Hold the lock button for 2 seconds.
  2. New install: press the push bar a few times until the opener runs.
  3. Check the wires: remove the control, trim the wires to 7/16" and reconnect. Loose strands touching the board stop it working.
  4. Test the wire: disconnect the wires from the control and touch them together. If the opener runs, replace the wall control. If not, check the wire or the opener's logic board.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which wall control works with my LiftMaster or Chamberlain opener?
Check the color of the LEARN button on the motor unit. White (2025 on, Security+ 3.0) takes the L955W, L956W, L957W, L958W or 041-0489-000. Yellow (Security+ 2.0, 2011 on) takes the 880LMW, 881LMW, 882LMW, 883LMW, 885LM, 886LMW or 889LM. Openers with a red/orange or purple button (1997 to 2014) can use the 41A5273-1 multi-function panel, the replacement for the 78LM, or the 889LM myQ control panel (most openers made 1998 or later). Neither works with green learn button openers.
Why is my wall control blinking and the remotes don't work?
On LiftMaster and Chamberlain openers, a constantly flashing wall control LED means the opener is in Lock mode, which blocks the remotes. Press and hold the lock button for 2 seconds (it may be under the push button cover). A single blink as the door moves is normal; it shows the opener passing a travel point.
Why doesn't my garage door wall button work?
On a new install, press the button a few times; Security+ 2.0 controls need to sync with the opener. Then check the wiring: trim the wires to 7/16" and make sure no loose strands touch the circuit board. If touching the two wires together runs the opener, replace the wall control. If it doesn't, check the wire run or the opener's logic board.
Where is the learn button on my garage door opener?
On LiftMaster, Chamberlain and Craftsman openers it's on the motor unit, on the side where the wall control and safety sensor wires connect, next to the antenna wire; you may need to remove the light cover. Many new wall controls, like the L955W, also have a learn button built in. On Genie openers it's the PROGRAM button on the motor unit.
