Garage Door Cable Drums 400-12 (D400-144), Standard Lift, 12' Max Door Height (Pair)

These 400-12 cable drums are standard lift drums for garage doors up to 12 ft high. One drum mounts at each end of the torsion shaft. As the springs turn the shaft, the drums wind the lift cables and raise the door. The 400-12 is rated for doors up to 12 ft high and 375 lb per drum.

Standard lift drums are for doors where the track curves straight from vertical to horizontal with the shaft just above the opening. High-lift and vertical-lift track need a different drum.

How drum numbers work: the first number is the drum diameter and the second is the door height. A 400-8 is a 4" drum for doors up to 8 ft; a 5250-18 is a 5-1/4" drum for up to 18 ft (19'-3" max); an 800-32 is an 8" drum for up to 32 ft. A bigger drum changes the cable length and the spring you need, so replace drums with the same size unless the springs are being recalculated.

Cable length

Cut each lift cable to the distance from the floor to the center of the shaft, plus 8". This leaves enough wraps on the drum when the door is closed.

Installation overview

Replacing cable drums means unwinding and rewinding the torsion springs, which store enough energy to cause serious injury. This job should be done by a trained door technician with proper winding bars and the door clamped down. Replace the cables when you replace the drums, and add cable keepers if the cable has been jumping off the drum.
