These are premium 3/16" garage door torsion cables, sold as a pair. Torsion cables run from the bottom brackets to the cable drums on the spring shaft and carry the weight of the door. This set is 7x19 galvanized aircraft cable (7 strands of 19 wires each), which is more flexible and longer lasting on the drum than 7x7 cable.
Is 3/16" the right size?
3/16" is a heavy cable, used on commercial and heavy doors. Most residential doors use 1/8" cable. Match the size of your old cable, and check that your cable drums are rated for 3/16". Lighter options in the same style: 5/32" and 1/8". Residential cables by door height: torsion cables, all sizes.
Length
Each cable is 16'1" long, with a floating stop, for doors up to 14 ft high. For high lift or vertical lift doors, call us at 877 379 4947 with your door height and lift.
Replacing cables
- Replace both cables at the same time.
- The springs must be fully unwound first: cables hold the door under spring tension.
- Check the drums and bottom brackets for wear while you're at it.

Breaking strength is the load that breaks one new cable (Wire Rope Users Manual). It is not a working load rating: the springs carry the door's weight, and cables should be replaced when frayed, kinked or rusted.
