Garage Door Opener Safety Sensors

If your door reverses, won't close, or the opener lights blink, the safety sensors (photo eyes) are the most common cause. These infrared eyes mount near the floor on each side of the door and stop it from closing on an obstruction. We stock OEM replacement safety sensors and photo-eye sets for LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Linear and more.

Blinking lights = sensor issue. Before replacing, check that the two sensors face each other, are wired correctly, and have clean lenses — a steady indicator light on both means they are aligned. Persistent blinking after cleaning and alignment usually means a sensor or wire has failed.

Diagnosing Photo-Eye Problems

Garage door safety sensors are required by law on every residential opener made since 1993. When they fail or misalign, the opener refuses to close the door (so it can't crush anything) and signals the fault by blinking its lights or beeping. Most issues are alignment or dirt, but sensors do wear out.

  • Both LEDs solid: sensors are aligned and working.
  • One LED off or flickering: realign the brackets until both lights are steady.
  • Still blinking after alignment: clean the lenses, check for cut/pinched wires, then replace the sensor set.
  • Sun glare in the lens can cause false trips — shade or reposition the affected eye.

Replace sensors as a matched pair (sending + receiving eye) and match them to your opener brand — LiftMaster/Chamberlain and Genie systems use different sensors and are not interchangeable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my garage door opener light blinking and the door won't close?
A blinking opener light almost always means the safety sensors (photo eyes) are blocked or misaligned. Clear any obstruction, wipe the lenses, and adjust the brackets until both sensor LEDs glow steady. If the lights keep blinking, a sensor or its wiring has likely failed and needs replacing.
How do I align my garage door safety sensors?
Loosen the wing nut on each sensor bracket and gently tilt the sensors until they point directly at each other. When both indicator lights are solid (not flickering), they're aligned. Tighten the brackets without knocking them out of position.
Can I replace just one safety sensor?
It's best to replace both as a matched set. The sending and receiving eyes are calibrated to work together, and mismatched or different-age sensors often cause persistent alignment faults. Match the set to your opener's brand.
Are LiftMaster and Genie safety sensors interchangeable?
No. Sensor wiring, voltage, and connectors differ between brands, so LiftMaster/Chamberlain and Genie photo eyes are not cross-compatible. Match the replacement sensors to your opener's brand and model.
Do all garage door openers need safety sensors?
Yes. U.S. federal law has required photo-eye safety sensors (or an equivalent) on every residential garage door opener made since 1993. An opener with failed sensors will refuse to close automatically, which is the system working as designed.
